‘Middlemarch’ – George Eliot

Middlemarch

Where do I begin?

I started this book in October and have only just managed to finish it. I feel like an enormous weight has been lifted off of my shoulders. I can breathe again! Never has a book taken me so long to finish. I don’t know why but I just couldn’t get into this novel. To be fair I did enjoy it more once I got into it, but that wasn’t until about page 550. If I hadn’t been studying this novel I don’t think I would have managed to finish it, although I am glad I did. Feels like a huge achievement!

I loved the characters of Will Ladislaw, Dorothea Brooke and Mary Garth. The character of Mr. Casaubon infuriated me. He was dull, controlling and unfair to his wife and his relatives. The character of Rosamund was also frustrating. She did nothing to help her husband during his financial difficulties and just increased his stress and acted like a spolit child.

The toughest book I have ever tackled but I’m pleased I persisted and managed to finish it.
