‘Far From The Madding Crowd’ – Thomas Hardy

I really enjoyed this novel. I was skeptical to begin but I found myself lost in the story and couldn’t wait to see how it ended.

Gabriel Oak is one of three suitors for Bathsheba Everdene. The novel follows Oak’s life as he works for Miss Everdene after having had his marriage proposal rejected. He must watch as other men court and try to win her heart.  Gabriel is a constant character who is honest, loyal and hard working. I was hoping for a happy ending right from the start but Hardy makes you wait and witness Bathsheba’s unfortunate choices first. Boldwood is a suitor who you sympathise with. He was quite content with his life until Bathsheba played a joke on him. Sergeant Troy, on the other hand, deserves what he gets and pays thr price for not staying true to the woman he loves.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel and can see why it is one of Hardy’s most successful novels. Definitely worth a read.
